Training Requirements for Child Care Providers

Family child care applicants must complete the following required training before becoming licensed:

• Abusive Head Trauma (AHT).
• Developmentally Appropriate Behavior Guidance.
• Pediatric CPR (needs to incorporate psychomotor skills).
• Pediatric First Aid.
• Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID): if caring for infants.
• Supervising for Safety for Family Child Care (6 or 8 hour course).

Before transporting children younger than 8 years of age, providers must take an approved Child Passenger Restraint Systems (C.A.R.S.) training.

All caregivers include second adult caregivers, substitutes, and helpers. Review the Training Requirements for Licensed Family Child Care-DHS-7672 (PDF).

• "Helper" means a person at least 13 years of age and less than 18 years of age who assists the provider with the care of children.
• AHT (Abusive Head Trauma) training (required every two years, with a video option allowed in the alternate year) prior to assisting with the care of children under school age.
• SUID training (required every two years, with a video option allowed in the alternate year) prior to assisting in the care of infants.
• Helpers must complete six hours of training within one year after the date of initial employment.
