Washington County commemorates 175th anniversary with resolution, board meeting at Historic Courthouse

The Washington County Board of Commissioners marked the county’s 175th anniversary with a special board meeting at the Historic Courthouse in Stillwater, Oct. 29.

During the meeting, the Board Chair Stan Karwoski, District 2, thanked county staff for their continued commitment to public service, spoke about the historical significance of the Historic Courthouse, and honored Commissioner Gary Kriesel, District 3, for his 20-year tenure on the County Board.

The County Board passed a resolution that proclaims Oct. 27, 2024, as the 175th Anniversary of Washington County and celebrates the county’s long and enduring legacy of service. The resolution notes that Washington County has provided key services to its residents since its establishment in 1849, including elections administration, record keeping, road maintenance, parks, law enforcement, probation supervision, social services, courts, libraries, public health programs, services to residents, and more.

In attendance were representatives from the Minnesota Senate, Minnesota House of Representatives, Metropolitan Council, and council members and mayors from cities and municipalities from around the county. Also in attendance were members from the Washington County Historical Society and the Washington County Historic Courthouse Advisory Committee. Congresswoman Betty McCollum provided an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol building for the occasion.

County Board makes appointments to Workforce Development Board

The Washington County Board of Commissioners made two appointments to the Workforce Development Board.

The board appointed Nicole Linscheid to a partial term as a Business Representative starting Oct.30, 2024, and expiring Dec. 31, 2026. The board also appointed Holly Jackson to a partial term as a Business Representative starting Oct. 30, 2024, and expiring June 30, 2025.

Pember Companies, Inc. selected for St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park Hilltop Improvement Project

The County Board of Commissioners awarded a contract to Pember Companies, Inc. for the site work bid package for the St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park Hilltop Improvement Project.

Under the site work bid package contract for $515,262.85, Pember Companies, Inc. will raze the existing restroom building, install a new septic system, resurface and restripe the tennis court to accommodate tennis and pickleball, and complete the site work required for the new playground container. Site and building construction will begin this fall and are expected to be complete in spring 2025.

Bids were opened Oct. 17 and Pember Companies, Inc. was the lowest responsible bidder of four bids received. The contract will be paid for using funds from Metropolitan Council grants.
