October is Fire Prevention Month
Fire Prevention Month began in remembrance of the devastating Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and serves as an annual reminder to review fire safety practices at home. To help keep yourself, your family, and your pets safe, follow these safety precautions:
- Install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms in key locations — in each sleeping room, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home.
- Test alarms regularly — a good rule of thumb is to check them when you change your clocks for daylight saving time in March and November. Most smoke alarms have a life span between 8-10 years.
- Keep at least one fire extinguisher on each level of your home and make sure everyone knows how to use it.
If your smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, or fire extinguishers need replacement, you can bring them to the Environmental Center for proper disposal.
